01 · The contribution
The idea, in everyday language
A historical account may list dates and casualties while leaving out what violence feels like to the people who survive it. Han Kang’s writing brings bodies, memory and individual voices into that space.
Human Acts returns to the 1980 Gwangju massacre through multiple perspectives. The Vegetarian explores refusal, control and bodily autonomy. Across different works, her precise, lyrical language makes the fragility of human life difficult to keep at a distance.
Why it matters
Her work has brought Korean literature to a wider readership while deepening literary approaches to collective trauma and individual resistance.
