A life in context
The person behind the prize
Mohammadi studied physics and became involved in journalism and human rights work. She joined the Defenders of Human Rights Center in 2003. Repeated imprisonment did not end her advocacy for women, political prisoners and an end to the death penalty. She was imprisoned when the 2023 award was announced.
The contribution
Her work connects women’s equality with civil freedom and opposition to state violence. She has documented abuses and supported other prisoners, making individual experiences visible in the wider struggle for human rights.
The idea in plain language
Human rights become concrete in the freedom to speak, to organise and to live without coercion. Mohammadi’s advocacy connects the oppression of women with the wider suppression of civil society.
