Small RNAs add another layer of gene regulation.

  1. One genome, many jobs

Cells control how instructions are used.

  2. A tiny RNA pairs up

    microRNA binds a messenger RNA.

  3. Turn production down

Less of the corresponding protein is made.

microRNAs are RNA, not miniature proteins.

01 · The discovery

The idea, in everyday language

Many cells share the same DNA but do different jobs. Part of the explanation lies in controlling when genetic instructions are used. Ambros and Ruvkun studied worms whose development happened at the wrong time.

They discovered that a very short RNA could bind to a messenger RNA and reduce the production of its protein. These microRNAs added a new layer to gene regulation. Later findings showed that the mechanism is widespread in animals, including humans.

Why it matters

MicroRNAs help coordinate development and cell behaviour. Understanding them has changed basic biology and provides research avenues for studying disease.

His laboratory found that the lin-4 gene produced a tiny RNA rather than a protein. Sharing results with Gary Ruvkun helped reveal how that RNA controlled another gene.

He showed that lin-4 regulated the production of protein from lin-14 messenger RNA. Later work on let-7 demonstrated that this kind of small-RNA control was shared far beyond one worm species.
